Dear Member,
What a week. On Monday we were gearing up for an all out leadership election. Today, in Theresa May we have a new Prime Minister and a renewed mission for our party.
I know that many of us campaigned on different sides of the EU Referendum, but we should all be encouraged that we now have a Prime Minister and a top team we can all rally behind.
For those who campaigned for Britain to leave, be confident that we now have leaders in place who believe wholeheartedly that Britain can be stronger outside of the European Union. In Boris Johnson, David Davis and Liam Fox, we have a dedicated team who have been tasked with making a true success of Brexit, and with ensuring that our country finds a renewed and outward-looking role on the world stage.
For those who voted to remain, take heart that the renewed vision for our party that the Prime Minister set out this week; that of an inclusive, compassionate and One Nation approach to government, will mean we have the right priorities when we make decisions that will effect all the people of our country.
In the coming years our challenge will be to deliver on the key promises of Brexit and, at the same time, to shape our city and our country with the One Nation vision that the Prime Minister outlined in her speech.
“When we take the big calls, we'll think not of the powerful but you. When we pass new laws, we'll listen not to the mighty but to you. When it comes to taxes, we'll prioritise not the wealthy but you. When it comes to opportunity, we won't entrench the advantages of the fortunate few. We will do everything we can to help anybody, whatever your background, to go as far as your talents will take you.” - Theresa May
For Bethnal Green and Bow, this approach is perhaps more relevant than in many parts of the country. We are bordered by Canary Wharf to the South East and the City of London to the West while our constituency remains one of London’s most deprived areas. Too many grow up in the shadow of a shining high rise but feel they have no stake in our city’s economic success.
Whether or not we believed in ‘Take Back Control’, in many ways as a country we do now have more control over our future. And this ‘control’ comes with a greater weight of responsibility to get it right.
I hope you will join us to build on this vision and put it into practice. Please keep an eye out for updates on our social events and for opportunities to campaign, discuss ideas, and to contribute to our community.
